This month our theme is pumpkins! We will be reading about pumpkins, doing pumpkin art, and learning about the soil pumpkins grow in. We will be painting pumpkins as well. Please purchase a medium sized pumpkin (or one about the size of your child's head) and send to school by Oct.21. The students will then create a design, paint their pumpkin, and take their pumpkin home in time for Halloween.
In Language Arts we are working on the accuracy strategies lips the fish, and stretchy snake. We will be working on the comprehension strategies making connections, naming the characters, and story elements. We will be starting our At Home Reading which is called the R.E.D. (Read Every Day) program next week. There will be more instructions coming home with it, but essentially your child will bring home 2 books each Monday to read each night for the week. It is important that your child read the same books each night to help build their confidence and comprehension. As students become more proficient readers it is easy to let them read on their own, but a critical part of growing as a reader is improving your comprehension skills. Please ask your child questions about what he/she has read to make sure he/she is understanding what was read, and so that he/she begins to develop high level thinking about their reading. I will send home some sheets that have example questions to ask about fiction and non-fiction books. If you have any questions please let me know.
I have added our RAZ Kids account to the blog. The teacher user name is tdumont0. We have used this in class and your child knows how to log in under his/her name. Your child should read a book, and then answer the comprehension questions before moving onto the next book. I will adjust your child's level throughout the year after testing your child's reading level. If you have any problems using the site please let me know.
In Math we have started our patterns unit. You should be able to see your child’s data analysis mark in Parent Portal shortly. Grade 2 students are working on finding the pattern core and extending the pattern. Grade 3 students are working on increasing and decreasing patterns and writing the pattern rule.
Thank you for all the donations for STEM! Mrs. Bechard, Mrs. Benjamin, the grade 2s and 3s, and I appreciate all of the items that have been donated. We had our first STEM. activity last week that the students loved it! On average we will be doing 2-3 activities a month. Please ask your child what he/she created with his/her group and how their creation worked.
My husband and I are happy to announce that we are expecting our second child in March. I will stay at school as long as the baby is healthy. This is such an amazing group of students and I am sad that I will not be here for the whole year with them.
